As fate would have it, the arrival of My Politic at Three Springs Barn comes almost exactly one year after the last presidential election. In a year when just about everyone has heard of ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, a young band from Tennessee releases an album called “12 Kind of Lost” that—as their website says—“is an anthology record with each song telling tales through a series of characters coping with heartache, depression, anxiety, detaching from roots, dealing with cancer and fighting addiction.” Lead-singer Kaston Guffey says, “It’s pretty dark, but honest.” The title track from their new album is a good place to start your acquaintance the band, whose music is as much folk and Appalachian mountain tinged, as it is country. “If I’m Alive”, from their album “Love and a Motor Home” is another lyrically rich song. Musically, I’m loving “Could You Come Home” from one of their earlier albums. For those of you that really want to squeeze the most out of this evening, I encourage you to listen to the episode of Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History podcast that explores the lyrical divide between country and rock music. Whether you agree with him or not, it’s thought provoking.
